Nakusp and area includes about 4000 people who are in the catchment area for the Nakusp and District Sports Complex. This Complex includes one ice rink, 4 sheets of curling, a squash court, and an auditorium with kitchens and concession. The ice plant and heating systems are 25 years old and failing. Delterra has obtained grant funding to upgrade the ice plant and building heating systems to use less power, and to recycle heat.
The new upgrades will include 6200 W of solar with battery backups, heat recovery off the ice making, possible geo-thermal loops outside, and heat storage of waste heat for showers and Zamboni fill. Heat pump systems may be used for ice making and heating/cooling of the building.
Delterra Engineering, working with mayor, staff and council, has secured 80% provincial, regional district and municipal funding to upgrade the facility.
